Microsoft has been trying to make XBox into something other than a game console for a while. They tried to turn it into a media center, with a notable lack of success. Merging it with desktop gaming very well could kill it off. Consoles adopted a razor blade model a long time ago. The console itself is often sold at a loss when introduced. The real money is made from the games. Now the loss per console can often be reduced, if not reversed, by integrating the components as the technology advances. To do that, their target has got to be stable for more than a year or two. So consoles have a much longer upgrade cycle.

Desktops are totally different. They are about as unstable as you can get. And they vary widely. It is hard to see how the two can co-exist well.
