If you watch HS and college RBs, you'll note the best ones immediately kick it to the outside when the middle clogs up. In the NFL, the edge rushers and OLBs are so fast that that's really hard to do. Barkley is not a lower his shoulder and hit the hole guy (like Skattebo). Barkely stutters and weaves. That's why he'll be like 10 carries for 23 yards then go 40 in one carry to the end zone. That's great for some teams (with passing games) and terrible for teams that rely on the run.

Barkley's 2018 rookie season highlights with the Giants. Note his constant runs to the outside.

They certainly did last season. So far this season not so much, as you said. They have had injuries and next up man not as good. Also not a fan of the new OC so far. It's a combination of things, imo. On the other side the defense has had some injuries and not as sharp as last season with a plug-and-play approach at certain positions. Hopefully their wizard of a GM will address some of this before the trade deadline but its a tough business.
