the GSM crowd had this scheme to license patents on a smorgasboard fashion. the "IN " crowd payed like 4-5% if at all royalties. In crowd were phillips, MOT, NOK, Ericy and a few other minor players.

If you were out of that circle, then you had to pay what you used and the number would get over 15% quickly.

So the GSM crowd felt they had the killer of all cash cows.

When we went to Korea, they were not able to get into their own domestic market and the rate to them was 19%. they had less than 5% of the world market on GSM, even though they were buying the IN crowd GSM chipsets. I remeber them trying to certify their phones and they kept failing time after time. It was NOT a technical problem.

so Q came in and did a one price for all rotating license that says once you pay the 5%, you pay for all patents going forward and it is forever a package deal. that rate is now like 3% or less.

And along with that, Q offered to teach and guarantee that the phones met teh standard and were able to be sold. we set up a formal lab in San Diego and they would come and submit it to use for certification. it was the beginning of the PTCRB cert lab process.

so yea, the IN crowd guys got real upset in that they had already touted that they were going to rule the world and make billions of dollars and it fell flat fast. Hence the holy wars with the GSM crowd. To this day they still harbor greviances. I deal with them from time to time and always the same crap.
