Nope.

At West Point, cadets did take an oath, but it was an oath of allegiance to the United States, not specifically to “preserve, protect and defend the Constitution.” That exact phrasing comes from the Presidential Oath of Office, not the military one.

The cadet oath in Robert E. Lee’s era (1820s) required allegiance to the United States and obedience to the President and officers appointed over them.

When Lee became an officer in the U.S. Army, he would have taken a similar officer’s oath to “bear true faith and allegiance to the United States of America” and to “obey the orders of the President.”

Lee swore an oath of allegiance to the U.S. and its Constitution.

Lee did not take the Presidential oath wording, “preserve, protect and defend the Constitution.”

In short: yes, Lee took an oath to uphold the Constitution, but not in those exact words.

Not dealing with the SOUTH in a harsher manner just led to the same old shit only now done differently...with share-cropping...incarceration....and Jim-Crow laws. If the South was forced to accept the new status of the freed slaves and let them prosper and integrate into society we would never have had all the civil rights and racial tension that exists to this day. Andrew Johnson started that cluster fukk when he took over for Lincoln.

Now we have another insurrection in the present and some asshole pardons them leading to the shit show we have in this country today by sending the message you can shit on other people......just as trumps sick tik tok shitting on Americans shows them. The USA will work its way out of this shit show but it will take a long time to undo the damage.....a lot of people will be going to jail.

That he did. He decided to break that oath to serve what he felt was a higher calling. But, like with civil disobedience, there is a cost which you might have to pay. It very well may be that in the fullness of time, your sacrifice will be honored because your side wins. If not, though...
