HELOC interest is tax deductible so long as the funds are used for home/property improvement. Never heard of anyone using it specifically to reduce income though.

I have not been following this discussion so no idea how that came up.

I think its a game super rich people play to reduce adjusted gross income for tax purposes.
One borrows money from assets like Real Estate and Stock to live on.
Borrowed money puts cash into your hands to spend but there is no income registered.

Low income then qualifies you for federal assistance. (Lower taxable income, Lower medicare, Lower ACA premium, SS not taxable and you might even qualify for SNAP).

If you have enough money, this borrowing against your assets will never present as a problem.

Personally, I don't think this strategy would be practical or comfortable for either of us as we might not be rich enough nor needy enough.

I'm using a HELOC to supplement my income, not to reduce it but it works the same way. You are basically borrowing against the equity of your house and you pay interest on the loan.

NOTE: I have a short term life event that requires me to utilize my HELOC. I am not one of the billionaires gaming the system. lol
