NASA did not discover anything, the Galactic Barrier was known since at least 1966.

In early Star Trek (specifically Star Trek: The Original Series), the boundary you’re referring to was called “the Galactic Barrier.”

Details:
  • First appearance: Episode “Where No Man Has Gone Before” (Season 1, Episode 3, 1966).

  • Description: A mysterious, shimmering energy field surrounding the edge of the Milky Way Galaxy. It emitted a powerful force that could destroy starships or cause strange mutations in crew members who passed through it.

  • Significance: The Enterprise’s encounter with the Galactic Barrier caused Lieutenant Commander Gary Mitchell and Dr. Elizabeth Dehner to develop godlike psychic powers — one of the earliest and most iconic “cosmic consequence” episodes in Star Trek.

  • Later references: The Barrier appeared again in “By Any Other Name” and was mentioned in other Star Trek series, including Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Lower Decks, always representing the edge of the known galaxy and a symbolic limit of human exploration.
So in short — it was the Galactic Barrier, the boundary marking the edge of the Milky Way that “no man had gone beyond.”
