Russia needed to rearm after invading the Donbas. Not to mention, taking Crimea wasn't cheap. Russia has a consistent pattern of invading a neighbor, taking a break of about 10 years to recover, and then invading another. Ukraine just had the temerity to not collapse when invaded the first time.
