college degree and possibly a certificate after a year or two after graduation. for example cpa , law, nursing, etc. i agree if your child is just going to have a four or five year social life. studying subjects which do pay a significant reward for their education or no demand.

A trade is much better than giving your child extended education that will never pay out. I gave my children the down payment to get a mortgage to buy a house. i really do not understand why parents who can afford to do like wise do not. Perhaps the kids have a house but cannot make monthly payments?
