What does it mean when people put the $ sign in front of the stock symbol?

Sorry for being a noob. But does this mean a call or put? Like if someone says "$FB" what does that mean?

it works like a hashtag on stocktwits and twitter, and generally just used to clarify you’re talking about the stock. I don’t like FB and I don’t like $FB could have different meanings if it’s not clear you’re talking about the stock in the conversation.
