The $ indicates I'm talking about a stock.

In this case, the stock I'm talking about trades with the symbol DJT.

Using the $ in front of a stock symbol is an online convention that has been adopted to reduce ambiguity, and specify that you're talking about a stock.

It's been in use for many years on Social Media.

$DJT indicates I'm talking about the stock DJT.

If I just said DJT, you wouldn't know if I was talking about the Transport Index, the stock, or the douche in the White House.
