I give you one example of the ripple effects. NASA, and this is true, had trained women astronauts to send up in case the soviets also sent a female astronaut to the moon. The US wasn't going to the let the Soviets win the mangle of women empowerment. In our timeline, that never happened because the Russians never did send a female cosmonaut to the moon.

In the series they do and as a result this changes the trajectory of the women's movements in America. Furthermore, they researched the lives and personalities of the women that NASA had trained and extrapolated how their lives would have changed if they had not been abandoned and the program had continued.

This is not a major part of the story, so I didn't spoil much for you. But it does give you a taste for how the series works.
