I think forest volume is more of a guess based on sampling techniques extrapolated into models, versus actual measurement. Have read similar methods are used to guess the global population and that may be a WAG as well in real terms.

My favorite forest story was a Canadian company, a bit over a decade ago claiming it controlled vast acres of timberland in mainland China. It turned out to be a complete scam and those vast acres of Chinese timberland were imaginary. I even made a few bucks short it but most fascinating to me was the disbelief of the two people I knew long that fraud that couldn't face reality. Sino-Forest was its name.
