Now if we can connect Sand to this $35-$70 BILLION business...maybe we have something going.

DB2 Magazine: That sounds like a major change in IBM's emphasis away from discrete product
sales and support.

Barnes: Well, why are we doing this? BI is going to be a huge business; the Palo Alto Management Group
estimates $70 billion by 2001, while IDC has a more conservative estimate of $35 billion. Either way, that's a
very big business for IBM. I know that Steve Mills [general manager of IBM Software Solutions] and I agree
that somewhere after the turn of the century, spending on BI systems will outpace that on more traditional
operational systems. Steve has made an interesting comment that within 10 years, when people talk about IT
organizations, they will be talking about using information to run their companies. They won't be talking about
traditional operational or transaction systems -- those will be understood, just like we take it for granted that we
have plumbing in our houses. Instead, it will be the use of information for a strategic imperative that will
distinguish companies from each other.

thanks for site #2, let. I just finished reading the OLAP one... .. what I kept remembering as I read it all is all the time I spent trying to write and get things to work when I pursued a minor in comp science way back when .... The value of the time this company has spent testing its product cannot be over emphasized... so many humans make so many errors! Thanks again.. look forward to site #2!
