What a load. Has no one explained this part of Trump to you?

I learned the following from Scott Adams 10 years ago:

When Trump showers someone with over-the-top praise first (“You’re the best Secretary of State we’ve ever had,” “Nobody has ever been more loyal,” etc.), he is creating an imaginary stack of chips in that person’s mind. The target feels they own something valuable: Trump’s public approval.

Then, when Trump later attacks or fires them, the psychological pain isn’t just the insult itself; it’s the loss of that recently granted status. Gamblers call this the “swing.” The loss feels much larger than if Trump had been cold or neutral from the beginning. It makes them think hard before publicly crossing him. It's been a life-long public relations policy for Trump.
