I asked Grok how many shares they retired the last 5 years :

5 million out of 393 million.
Share count now.
388 million. Only in 2024 the number of shares really went down. But it went down a lot
in 2024 :).

ASML Shares Outstanding Over the Past 5 YearsYes, ASML Holding N.V. (ASML) has been actively repurchasing its shares, which has contributed to a gradual decline in the number of shares outstanding over the past 5 years. While there have been minor fluctuations year-to-year (e.g., due to issuances or timing of buybacks), the overall trend is downward, from approximately 393 million shares at the end of 2020 to around 388 million as of mid-2025.This data is based on end-of-period (EOP) shares outstanding from annual reports. Here's a summary table of the annual figures:

Year

2020 (Dec)

2021 (Dec)

2022 (Dec)

2023 (Dec)

2024 (Dec)

Recent Quarterly Data (2025):
  • Q1 (Mar): 388.15 million
  • Q2 (Jun): 388 million
  • Q3 (Sep): 388 million
The decrease aligns with ASML's ongoing share repurchase programs, which have totaled billions of euros over this period to return capital to shareholders and potentially boost earnings per share (EPS). For context, ASML announced a €10 billion buyback program in 2023, and additional authorizations in 2024 and 2025. If you'd like more details on buyback volumes or projections, let me know!
