Canada Is The Biggest Buyer Of US Cars…And Trump Has Killed That Market
Trump is killing the export of US-made cars.

Canada is the premium customer for U.S.-made cars.

Losing it would be the ultimate disaster for the US.

No other country in the world buys Canada’s volume of American-made cars.

Trump’s big plan has been to use tariffs to get US manufacturing to re-locate to the US.

This has cost the US one million jobs thus far – the largest number of layoffs in years.

You could have seen this coming; here’s the depth of consideration Trump puts into a decision: he hated the ad that Canada ran in the US featuring Republican hero Ronald Reagan saying that tariffs were a bad idea. He clamped down another tariff in a hissy-fit. Americans will now pay another $50B in added costs because Trump got mad.

Overall, he took no heed of the fact that for the auto sector, the location of the final sale is Canada.

He thinks that Canada will let go of its auto jobs – which have been integrated with the US since rubber met the road – without a rejection of products made in the US.

His major crime was in putting tariffs on steel and aluminum – vital in car production. To a company like Subaru, paying the increased price in the US makes it impossible to justify building a car in America; they can make it cheaper without involving TrumpLand.

Subaru has now ended US production of vehicles to be sold in Canada. From now on, they will be shipping from Japan directly to Canada, instead of going through their factory in Indiana.

Subaru now sells 70,000 cars in Canada, and is increasing its sales by more than 2.5%/year. Some 26% of those cars were made in the US. The Indiana plant has almost 7,000 workers, so a reduction of 26% would mean that 1,700 are no longer required.

That’s 1.700 U.S. auto jobs gone. Destroyed by Trump’s tariff policy.

Prime Minister Mark Carney has confirmed an alliance with the government of Japan. The future of cars is being built in Canada - not America.

This is a geo-political reset. The balance of global industry now points north.

Auto makers are now packing up in the US, and heading north.

Subaru’s announcement set a chill through international industry.

Reverse localization means that every policy meant to pull industry into the US is now pushing it back abroad.

Canada is now the safe harbour for foreign companies. Toyota, Hyundai and BYD are now looking to Canada. It has the consistency needed for industrial planning. South Korean Automakers Hyundai, Kia alone are having record breaking sales – sales that have skyrocketed 56.0% since April 2, 2025.

The “northern shift” is not noticed in America. But Carney has weaponized trust. His open trade policies and consistency were gold.

Trump announced that he had a $10-billion deal with Toyota. Toyota denied it.

The importance of this is not that jobs are being transferred to Canada; they are in fact being shifted to Japan. But Japan now sees Canada as a magnet in its own right; a first-stop consideration instead of an inclusion with the US.
