As a consumer, I would say wendy's chilli is not bad but their burgers and fries are sub par compared to Culvers and In Out Burger, and service and seating are too,

Beef prices have started to come down, so that's a big bonus for them, but won't show up for a bit. Their management has been inconsistent and a new CEO might help, but the business is steady and throws out a lot of cash with a nice dividend and they've been buying back a lot of shares, which also helps because they no longer have to pay the dividend on the retired shares too. Compare their value to others like MCD and I think there is a large runway. International growth has been helping too. Short interest increased a lot month over month, so that is just more pressure to the upside. It's almost amazed me when shorts pile in to decent companies. You say what happened with KSS over the last year with similar levels of short interest. It's a bonus if a short squeeze kicks off, but very possible and WEN is on the radar of short squeeze stocks, they had a little activity in July but didn't catch fire: finance.yahoo.com

Not quite sure what happened with WEN today...was trading lower and then went up 10% in a few minutes with a ton of volume coming into the stock and near and longer dated call options. I see rumors of a buyout posted online, but seems like no one can substantiate it or not. Either way something looks like it might be brewing or shaking loose there.
