I've had arguments with people who say America should not have nuked Japan, they don't know shit. Truman saved millions of lives on both sides, The Japanese fascists wanted to fight until the last man woman and child taking millions of the Allies lives with them.

To be clear, Japan wasn't the only latecomer to the Games of Empires. That was what drove Germany in WWI and WWII. The Kaiser, with a recently unified Germany, was setting up colonies in Africa and Oceania. His expansionist goals were the fuel for WWI. Japan, which had recently come out of isolationism, was doing the same in their local area. And Italy, having relatively recently unified their country under central control, were also being horsey in Africa.

All wanted to play the game the other powers played until the US Civil War illustrated how costly wars between industrialized powers could be. The various skirmishes leading up to WWI, along with the race for battleships, had convinced everyone except for the three mentioned above that the old game was just going to bankrupt countries that wanted to play. And the following wars only put a fine point on it.
