When I was approving enterprise tech purchases, some items that were purchased were past support, but were running through appliances that were supported. On top of that, there were like 12-layers of security software that had to be traversed just to get inside the company system.

We used a lot of $45 D-Link manageable switches locally on small groups, but those were running through Cisco supported systems and software, providing a layer of redundancy. Combined with the multiple layers of security software, it apparently remained fairly secure.
