2025 Memoir: Source Code: My Beginnings More recently (2025), in his memoir Source Code, Gates reportedly gave a more candid recounting: that in fact he did try LSD several times, during high school and college. The Independent+2People.com+2

Some of the memoir’s details (as reported) include:
  • His first LSD experience was on a “senior sneak-day” in high school; he said: “I decided to see what it was all about.” People.com+2mint+2

  • He described one of the trips as “exhilarating,” but since he had a scheduled dental surgery the next morning, the lingering effects made it a disconcerting experience. People.com+1

  • He claims he took LSD “four or five times in total,” with the last time when he was “like 21.” mint+2People.com+2

  • He says he gave it up because he values a working, sharp mind, and he felt psychedelics made thinking “sloppy.” The Independent+2mint+2
He also recounts an anecdote, in conversation with Steve Jobs, that Jobs once suggested Gates should try LSD to improve his creative/design sensibility; Gates quipped in response that he got “the coding batch,” while Jobs got “the marketing-design batch.” The Independent+2
