Read Replies (1) | Respond to of 97557 We had our first minny cold snap prior to turkey day, got down to 10 below or a bit colder in the valleys. Then it warmed up, got up into the mid twenties and we got a good snow. Yesterday it peaked, heading to the deep freeze now. Looks like to last almost into Xmas, a fairly long cold snap. Some 40 below stuff on tap, in the valleys. Lot of old duffers say in the good ole days 60 below was common. I think they are exaggerating. 60 below is not common, per my experience. The coldest part of AK is Cold Foot area, more than likely. Record AK low was near there, 80 below, Jan. 23, 1971. Record North American low a bit colder, over to the east in the Yukon. I do not appreciate these cold snaps anymore, in earlier days they did not really bother me. Things around the home are tenuous at those temps; autos, loss of grid power, loss of home heat, etc. You don't have a lot of time to get things repaired at 40 below. Tweets This cold snap we are having will undoubtedly head south, just when and how remain to be seen. Our coldest day of the year, on average, is about middle of Jan. 17 below for the low, about 0 for the high, lotta oscillation about those values, over the course of the winter. I live in the interior, we can get strong southern pushes from the Gulf of AK. If you are on the north side of the Brooks, you don't generally experience any of that. I have watched the pressue and temp patterns at this site for a few yrs now. Seems pretty accurate. Siberia is one cold mother. Worse than most of AK by far. North Slope more like Siberia. ventusky.com Younger days. Nice working temps for Malemutes are about 20 below. Even 40 below does not seem to bother them a whole lot. Man on Sled.
