What is the Pope’s mandate?

The Pope’s mandate is rooted in the belief that he is the successor of St. Peter, to whom Jesus entrusted leadership of the Church (Matthew 16:18-19; John 21:15-17).

In Catholic understanding, Christ himself gives the Pope his mandate: to shepherd the universal Church.

This isn’t merely honorary—it's considered a divine commission.

What is his role?

Officially, the Pope holds three interconnected roles:

Bishop of Rome
— He is the ordinary head of the diocese of Rome.
Supreme Pontiff (Supreme Pastor) of the worldwide Catholic Church
— He has universal jurisdiction and authority in matters of faith, morals, discipline, and governance.
Visible sign of unity
— He is meant to preserve and promote unity among Christians.

What is his “job description”?

While the Church would never phrase it quite like HR, canon law and doctrine define his responsibilities roughly as:

Primary Responsibilities

Teach	Guard and proclaim the deposit of faith; issue doctrine; correct error.
Sanctify	Promote worship, sacraments, and the spiritual life of the Church.
Govern	Oversee the administration of the Church and ensure discipline, justice, and mission.

What is his mandated goal?

To lead souls to salvation.

Everything else—diplomacy, charity, political statements—is secondary.

The Church describes this mission as:

Guard the truth, preach the Gospel, protect the unity of believers, and help people get to Heaven.
