I assume that Metricom is caught between technologies. Unless they have finalized the hardware design of the radios enough to begin manufacturing them, they ned to wait until the finish developing Autobahn before spending a lot of money on radios that may have to be replaced next year.

On the other hand, if they have Autobahn developed enough that they can manufacture the radios and then just update them via programming later then they could begin deployment in new service areas.

Of course, I am only referring to the technical issues. The negotiating to place equipment can certainly be happening before the radios are ready.
