As of 2025, there are 9 U.S. states with no state income tax on wages:

States with no income tax

  • Alaska

  • Florida

  • Nevada

  • South Dakota

  • Tennessee

  • Texas

  • Washington

  • Wyoming

  • New Hampshire*

* New Hampshire does not tax earned income (wages). It historically taxed interest and dividend income, but that tax is being fully phased out by 2027, making it effectively a no–income-tax state.

Important context

  • Some of these states make up for no income tax with higher sales taxes (e.g., WA, TX) or severance/resource taxes (e.g., AK, WY).

  • Property taxes can still be high in certain no-income-tax states (notably TX).

? If your focus is strictly earned income, all nine above qualify.
