He was, however, well-known as a fraudster. His "fertilizer" scam was actually replicated in '63 with the "Great Salad Oil Scandal", with an exquisite touch -- instead of empty containers, they filled the tanks (used as collateral) with water, except for the top few feet. They were aware the CPAs would sample the tanks by putting a stick down into them to estimate the amount of salad oil in the tanks. By having a layer of salad oil floating on the water, with the stick was withdrawn it would be coated with salad oil as it was withdrawn.
