There has developed a stratum of ridiculously-wealthy people (the "elite" that the magas rail against) who don't know how to spend all their money. There is a category of companies that do well by marketing to this stratum, with ridiculously-overpriced "luxury" products like this. Making hay - while the sun shines...

Same reason rock stars sell $10 T Shirts for $50 at the concerts. Some people will buy them. They make money in them plus get brand exposure. Buyers feel cool as a result.
