What Ford needs to do for the American market is to look at what Horse did, either license or roll their own design, and make a small, cheap REEV.

Their first product is roughly briefcase size, well a very thick briefcase at over 200mm, and can be mounted vertically or horizontally. Combine it with a battery of city range, say enough to go 100km or so. No self-driving, just a car. Something that should easily sell for under $20k. Ford has plenty of small vehicles that could be used to base it on. With a smaller battery, weight goes way down. Should be closer to 1 tonne instead of 2, compared to a Model 3.

They won't do it and eventually get flooded by Chinese cars that will, but that is what they need to do.
