Germany is in a bind. VW is the big Kahuna in Germany. And they clung to IC engines for too long. The whole scandal about diesels a few years back was a great example. Naturally, just like in the US, the German taxpayer had to bail them out, but they fell behind with EVs. So, just like in the US, they turn to lobbying to save their ass.

A problem they have is that Renault is working with Geely in a new joint venture, Horse. So the Frogs are positioned to eat Germany's lunch in cars if they aren't careful. Which, given VW's propensity to get bailed out by the government, means the German people will be on the hook...

To a very different degree than Americans, Germans have a whole psychosexual thing going on with cars. Specifically, they are an expression of masculinity. So a high revving IC engine checks a lot of boxes there. An amusing aspect is that BMW got a strong pushback when they test marketed a female voice for their cars. Male drivers ignored it. In most countries, a female voice gets the attention of both sexes. Not in Germany, apparently.
