Their problem is that most EV manufacturers want to compete with Tesla. Including FSD which Tesla still struggles with, despite having a serious lead and a huge database. It isn't that Tesla can't be competed with on those terms, but it is an expensive and low volume market for the foreseeable future.

Battery packs are under $100 kilowatt/hour to produce, now. It should be possible to sell a BEV for under $20k that is more than a Kei-style car. Especially using something like the Horse range extender. Which is a good bridge until the cost and weight of batteries come down some more.
