Don - you mis-read the article.

You said "Why can't these guys make money even in competition
when they sell the majority of their drives to DELL, CPQ and
other top-line makers?"

The article said: "The local Enterprise Storage Group already is
supplying the majority of high-capacity disk drives used in network
servers made by Compaq and Dell, only 16 months after releasing its
first product, said Chuck Haggerty, also Western Digital's chief
executive officer."

Please note that it is the Enterprise Division, not the whole company,
that is supplying lots of drives for SERVERS (not all Pc's) made
by Dell and Compaq. The Enterprise division is also growing very
quickly (not in the Roch. article, but well-known in WDC fan-clubs).
