They are stuck in that elevated payout purgatory from which they struggle to grow earnings (in part because they have no FCF to invest once the dividend is paid), can't issue much more debt (because their credit rating is already in the BBB+ range), and can't raise prices (because consumers are rebelling against inflation). It is a crowded room and a big part of why Staples as a category is much less safe than in past cycles.
