May 1995 UBICS unveils future plans EC News Network Bangalore UB INFORMATION and Consultancy services (UBICS), a UB Group company, is planning a major expansion in its offshore software development business this year. The company has earmarked an investment of between Rs 3 - 5 crore to set up two more software development facilities in Bangalore. Avinash Agarwal, vice president, (UBICS), told Express Computer that the company will focus on offshore software development and exports, in the current year. "This year the company is looking at at least 5 new projects from overseas clients which will yield a revenue of between Rs 8 crore to Rs 10 crore. Software exports should yield a revenue of 25 to 30 percent of our revenue this year" he said. UBICS has projected a revenue of Rs 30 crore for the current fiscal year. UBICS is also setting up two more software development facilities in Bangalore at a cost of between Rs 3 - 5 crore. The first, a 5000 square feet STP facility will be equipped with a 64 Kbps link and will be operational in June this year. The second will be a 25,000 sq ft facility which is slated to be operational in about eight months. In addition, the investments will also finance procurement of hardware and software. UBICS will also have another 150 people on board in the current year. The company is also planning a major foray into the European markets. Agarwal said that the focus will be more on the Scandanavian countries. UBICS hopes to caitalise on niche markets in these countries. To begin with, UBICS is also planning to get into image processing and multimedia in a big way this year. Agarwal sees a very large market for these solutions in Europe. The company's traditional strength has been in RDBMS, Power Builder and C++ application development. He said that commercial application development on these platforms will continue to be a focus area for UBICS in the current year. UBICS is also upgrading its existing product line. Its current product line include upgraded version of ZIP mail, an e-mail package which now has fax utilities and Internet and UU Net access, and Merlin, an executive information system which is being upgraded to run on Windows with multimedia utilities. Among its other products are Medaas (menu driven assets accounting system), Maestro an HRD package, and Smartfile, a package that enables users to keep track of WordStar files, will be available on Windows soon. Last year the company closed books with a turnover of Rs 10.5 crore as against a revenue of Rs 6.7 crore the precious year. This year, the company is aiming at a turnover of Rs 30 crore.
