Your comment brought to mind Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man, a book I read as a kid and completely missed the racial searching for identity thing.

I thought it was cool, living in basements and escaping detection, something like that. When I was a junkie that book came to mind, oddly, what I remembered of it. The lurking in basements part of it I presume.

I didn't even realize it was a 'black book' until maybe I was forty and ran into some reference that enlightened me. I think I read a lot of grown up books when I was a little kid and only got what I got from them.
