29 diplomats being recalled by Trump administration

Story by Ellie Cook, Newsweek, December 22, 2025

The Trump administration is recalling close to 30 senior diplomats across the world in what appears to be a new step in placing figures trusted by administration officials in foreign posts.

At least 29 career diplomats were told earlier this month their time in post would end at the start of 2026, The Associated Press reported on Sunday. The news agency cited two anonymous U.S. State Department officials.

John Dinkelman, who heads the American Foreign Service Association, told Politico in a piece published on Friday that the diplomats’ union had been hearing that ambassadors were told via phone they had to leave their posts by mid-January. No reason was given for their dismissal.

The Trump administration is well known for its political purging, and the appointees now leaving their post took up their positions during former President Joe Biden’s term in office. They had outlasted the initial culls in the first months of President Donald Trump’s second term.
