The Conference Board’s consumer confidence reading hit 89.1 in December, declining for the fifth consecutive month.

The trend, by itself, is worrisome for the broader economy. It should mean we are in a period in which households are reducing their spending, which usually leads to recession.

But are consumers really spending less? If not, are they simply borrowing more to make up the difference?
