Reason for SSB downgrading CPQ
Over in techland, it looks like a Salomon Smith Barney downgrade of Compaq
(CPQ:NYSE) has put a bit of a kibosh on the big move the sector's seen
lately.

"We are downgrading shares of Compaq to neutral from outperform based on
channel inventory concerns," wrote Salomon Smith Barney analyst Richard
Gardner in a note this morning. "Our sources indicate that Compaq has
already begun the process of negotiating with the channel to take on
additional inventory despite the fact that we believe that U.S. channel
inventories of Compaq product are still above five weeks." Compaq was down
1 1/8 to 32 7/8, having traded as low as 30 7/8.
