Two friends I grew up with took an old car out onto the frozen lake near our small town. He liked to tease her, and she was afraid of driving on the ice and for good reason. Late one night, the ice gave way and the car disappeared without leaving any surface trace. When spring rolled around, someone noticed the chrome rear bumper a few feet below the waterline. They both survived long enough to lose most of their fingernails, clawing at the back of the vehicle, trying to escape.
I actually bought each my car owning relatives one of those devices to break out windows and cut seatbelts loose. It is such a trivial thing to have in a car but for five bucks it is silly not to have them.
