If they’re lawless and corrupt - they’ll be brutal and broke. In the same vein, I think of our Democratic Republic as an immense fruit tree, with roots in the Constitution and Judeo/Christian ethic. Its soil is the population. As long as the soil is firm, that is, the people themselves are based, the tree stands and feeds them. But no tree stands for long when its soil erodes. The single best thing parents can do for their children is to be honest, decent people. If the parents are dishonest and bent - kids will know it, every time - and, sadly, will internalize that. I believe that the number one bad influence in American culture since I've been alive is fatherlessness. If people were honest and decent we wouldn't have such an epidemic of single moms raising children (though many of them make noble efforts to compensate for the gap an absent father creates). The stats tell the story. The trend has gone from ~ 1 in 10 children raised like that pre '60s to ~ 1 in 4 now. Thomas Sowell points to the Civil Rights Act as causing a horrendous reversal in the prevalence of nuclear Black families. What kids are internalizing from this is freedom doesn't need to concern itself with fairness and responsibility. If they want it they take it. Consequences are for suckers. If they don't want to honor a commitment to the girl they got pregnant, who cares, there's money to be had from a different "father," the government. Fairness to the taxpayer footing the bill will never cross their minds but the in-home father lets the kids know what it takes him to make a buck. How long will our tree stand?
