Another North American CDMA rollout....

[7] MANITOBA GETS TASTE OF CDMA-BASED PCS
MTS Mobility, the Mobility Canada affiliate responsible for
serving the province of Manitoba, officially launched CDMA-based
PCS service in Winnipeg today. Rollout plans call for
introducing PCS in the Brandon, Steinbach and Selkirk markets
later in the year, according to MTS Mobility. The company has
committed to spend more than Cdn $40 million during the next
four years to provide PCS to a majority of Manitoba's
population.
In keeping with its approach of offering a wealth of
wireless services, MTS Mobility noted that it "remains fully
committed" to analog cellular service. As proof, the company
said that it has earmarked more than Cdn $8 million toward
upgrading equipment and adding new cell sites in rural Manitoba
under its 1998 spending plan. "Cellular service will be with us
for many years to come, and we will continue to be the main
[provincial] provider," said James Fitzgerald, MTS Mobility's
president and chief operating officer. "In the years ahead,
however, our focus will be fixed on" PCS, with pricing levels
set to be competitive with the prevailing cellular rates.
Subscribers choose from four different PCS pricing plans.
Northern Telecom Ltd. [NT] provided the infrastructure that
went into the MTS Mobility network; handsets are being supplied
by Sony Electronics [SNE], Qualcomm Inc. [QCOM] and Audiovox
Corp. [VOX] to start. Handsets from Motorola Inc. [MOT] and
Nokia Corp. [NOK/A] will be offered once they have been fully
certified, an MTS Mobility spokeswoman said, adding that the
company expects to offer a selection of handsets from as many as
13 different vendors by year's end.
PCS service features initially available on the network
include call display and message waiting for voice mail. A
voice dialing feature will be provided before the end of May,
the company said. Pager, e-mail and Internet access
applications are in development. (Therese Mickelson, MTS
