Quote.com real time java applet works on Macintosh but...

This brings up an interesting point, which I didn't cover: the Java Virtual Machines (JVMs) for Macintosh are generally behind their PC counterparts. This is certainly true of the JVMs in Netscape and IE. This may be why it seems like applets work on PCs but not Macs.

You can try tricks like the ones Olivier mentioned. Memory makes a big difference. Oh, and running RAM doubler may not be a good idea for that, because of the way it plays with memory space.

One thing you might try is running Macintosh Runtime for Java (MRJ) instead of a Web browser, if all you want to do is view an applet. MRJ runs Java Developer's Kit 1.1, so it's up to date. MRJ won't render the HTML on the Web page, but it'll find whatever applets are embedded and run those.

MRJ is much faster and more stable than the JVMs in Netscape and IE.

You can get MRJ at:

Olivier! THANK YOU for posting how to get the quote.com java.applet for intraday charting to run. I will try it tomorrow. This is probably what I will have to do on Web Street for real time streaming. We should try to talk to Netscape about the problem so they will get current versions to work for us the way 3.0.1 works.

Did you try Version 3.0.4?

I'm thrilled to have this info, even though I like 4.0.4 and hate to give it up. Netscape won't allow running more than one copy at once -- unless you found a way around that, too?
