Venezuela's primary air defense network, including the systems intended to protect Caracas against enemy aircraft, was provided by Russia.
The air defense systems were purchased from Russia over the years and included:
  • S-300VM long-range systems
  • Buk-M2E medium-range systems
  • Pantsir-S1 short-range anti-aircraft missile and gun systems (delivered in late 2025)
  • Igla-S man-portable air defense systems (MANPADS)
  • ZU-23-2 anti-aircraft cannons

Venezuela also possessed some Chinese-made radars and older Swedish RBS 70 systems.
However, according to recent news reports from January 2026, the Russian-supplied air defenses in Venezuela were reportedly "neutralized" and failed to stop a U.S. military operation to capture President Nicolás Maduro. U.S. officials stated that American forces used electronic warfare and airstrikes to disable the systems.
