The bottom fell out of Venezuela's oil revenues after the US lifted sanctions on Iran and production of crude oil in the US roughly doubled from 2005 to 2014 after they exempted fracking from the Clean Water Act. Venezuela's economy suffered the same type of problems that Japan encountered in the 90s when exports no longer fueled growth. It is ironic that Japan and Germany were once touted as rival to the US economy, and they've both been taken down.
