I think CD-R comes in 2 flavors:
Write Once Read Many for $0.79 per 640mb in bulk, and
Write Many for $16.00 per 640mb in bulk

If speed is not an issue, The doctor is right, he should go with the WM disks.

If capacity is an issue, go with Jaz, as you can organize jaz disks easier than CD disks (labeling, and archiving them)

Sometimes you need to look beyond the hardware cost issues and argue the training/ease of use issues.

Remember hardware is only 20% of the cost of systems implementation.

And is the system for current demands or demand growth?

It does not require a techie head to rationalize explanations and requirements.

Also, ask Rocky and others about data/video storage. they are more knowledgeable.

BTW, how big is an MRI image and how many images on average are taken during a scan? How are they currently archived?

CD-R will be best for archiving, but little else.
-you can't write directly to them (you need to organize all images before you write to it)
-you can't edit the files once written
-it takes forever to write a CD-R, you can't just drag and drop the files

The Jaz would be a good working, intermediate storage/backup medium, but I
wouldn't use it to archive your images--too expensive, and wasteful. Don't
you already have some sort of removable storage like MO or Syquest
in your setup?
I thought most of the data or image acquisition setups (cathlab, MRI,
etc.) usually came with one of those removable storage devices.

We acquire data and store directly to Jaz (images and large continuous
data sets). Edit, sort, and document the files, then write to a CD-R
on another machine. We need the portability and speed of the Jaz for
the acquisition and editing, but you may not. Also, are you writing
the CD with the same machine you are acquiring images. You might not
want to tie up that machine for extended periods. Sending 500 MB over your
network to write CD's on a regular basis would not be nice.
You are welcome to e-mail me if I might be of more help.

You can only write once to CD-R; once you write it, you can't change it...

Magnetic media can be read/written over and over..
