"3Com Introduces Enterprise Network Services"
(02/25/98; 7:05 p.m. EST)
By Jeff Sweat, InformationWeek

3Com Wednesday made a play for enterprise
accounts with the announcement of a suite of
professional services that will let IT groups outsource
their network installation and management.

The Santa Clara, Calif., networking vendor announced
its Strategic Network Solutions, a set of packaged
and customized offerings. The company introduced
four new network services: Project Management,
Network Performance Check, Comprehensive
Network Installation, and Transcend Network
Management Implementation software.

The services are targeted directly at the enterprise,
analysts said, an area that has long been "home turf for
Cisco," while 3Com has mostly focused on small and
midsize businesses. "Here's 3Com's real entree into
the enterprise,"
said Ellen Carney, an analyst with
Dataquest in Westborough, Mass.

The services' biggest competition will be internal IS
resources, Carney said, adding that an IT shop might
try to implement something like the Transcend service,
but might misconfigure it or not tap its full capacity.
3Com's services will benefit customers primarily
because it has a better grasp on its own products than
the customers do. "3Com made the product; they
know how to use it," Carney said.

While 3Com has already offered professional services,
some of the new offerings will be packaged.
"Customers don't have to go through a long process of
defining the scope of work and negotiating terms. It's
all packaged in a way that's easy to buy," said Mary
Lou Healy, 3Com's director of customer service. The
services, available immediately, will cost $2,000 per
day.
