Mr. Svejk, re: Greenspan's Y2K comments ... talk about poor reporting!

Mr. Greenspan gave his Humphrey-Hawkins testimony to the Senate Banking committee yesterday. His prepared speech did NOT mention Year 2000. bog.frb.fed.us

In response to a question, Greenspan is quoted as saying: ""Inevitable difficulties are going to emerge," he said. "You could end up with . . . a very large problem.""

What they left out with the dots was that Greenspan said, with the available information, it appears almost all companies will successfully convert their code. Those remaining few would be left with "a very large problem". Very different answer. Talk about quoting out of context!

The article further misrepresents Greenspan's comments. From the article: "Greenspan reckoned that several hundred billion dollars will be spent trying to fix the computer glitch before the turn of the century." This is NOT true. Mr. Greenspan said that MOST of this money is being spent on new computer systems AND that it is difficult to tell how much is being spent to "resolve the problem".

Of course, fear sells papers.
Regards, Bill
