Netscape's Tailspin www5.zdnet.com

I missed this one in my normal cruising, it was linked on the previous article. General take is that the stock market fever lead to overextension. Too bad.

To its credit, Netscape is not accepting its extraordinary nosedive without a fight. It has moved quickly to cut excess baggage and change its course again, this time catering to user needs rather than trying to bend IT needs to its products.

Still, Netscape remains a critical part of the computing landscape. It offers the last, best hope against an all-Microsoft desktop and an all-Microsoft Web computing platform. Sun and others can't afford to see Netscape fall apart and may yet rescue it.

I don't know, I see hope in the source code givaway. Apache moves forward, no reason the browser can't too. Maybe they can get together for my browser server idea. If IE is 43 meg on Solaris, what's it going to be on Linux? What's it going to be on WebTV for that matter?

It may be too late for Netscape--and its investors--to learn from these mistakes. But if the wings fall off, one thing should be noted: Microsoft and its free-browser strategy won't be the sole reason for Netscape's crash. There will be plenty of blame to go around.

True enough. But, zeroing out the market for the internet's killer app is problematic, legally and otherwise.

Cheers, Dan.

Here is another news on Javagator,

"Whither Crawls Netscape's Javagator?"
wired.com

- "We've anticipated it for the simple reason that there's no money in browsers and that Netscape has released a free source version of Communicator," said Forrester's Schadler. "The only place you can run a Javagator today is on an NC - and there ain't none."
