And for those of us Yankee fans who had to face him... always assumed each pitch from the stretch was a balk!

In reality, once you put your hands together, as long as they don't separate, you can do all sorts of weird stuff as long as you eventually come to a complete and discernible stop. You can twist your body any way you want once delivering the pitch, but if you are going to instead throw to first as a righty, you have to make a clear and distinct move to first. Tiant did that.
