Downtown parking rates climb nearly 25 percent

April 30 - Denver's thriving economy pushed up rates for Downtown parkers nearly 25 percent last year over 1997, according to a study released Thursday.
Despite the addition of several thousand parking spaces throughout Downtown, prices continued to creep up, averaging anywhere from $2.67 in the northeast part of Downtown to $8.88 in the city core. In 1997, rates averaged $1.96 to $8.35 in those areas, respectively. Blame that on Downtown's success in filling office buildings and the limited parking available, said officials with Joseph Farber and Co., who conducted the survey.
"It reflects the continuing vibrancy of Downtown,'' said Jim Burbach, vice president at Joseph Farber, a commercial appraisal firm based in Denver. But "it's still somewhat of a shock.''
The steepest increase, 44.5 percent, occurred in the northeast part of Downtown, generally between Broadway, Park Avenue and 20th Avenue. Still, rates were lower there than in other parts of Downtown....
