Thai PM to meet George Soros in U.S.

BANGKOK, March 8 (UPI) _ George Soros, the billionaire currency speculator accused of triggering Asia's financial crisis by attacking the Thai baht, will meet the Thai prime minister this week to discuss investment opportunities.

Soros and other American financiers are scheduled to have dinner with Prime Minister Chuan Leekpai during the Thai leader's six-day visit to the United States, beginning Wednesday.

Bangkok press reports today quote Deputy Foreign Minister Sukhumbhand Paribatra (''SOO-koom-bahn pah-ree-BAHT'') as saying Soros as one of many American businessmen who had approached the Thai government about making multimillion-dollar investments in the beleaguered kingdom.

Sukhumbhand, who returned from Washington Friday, says Soros will host the dinner Wednesday in his capacity as chairman of the Council on Foreign Relations.

The Hungarian-born currency speculator has been blamed for undermining the Thai baht, which led the Thai government to float the currency last July and triggered sharp falls on most Southeast Asian currency markets.

During this week's trip to the United States, the Thai prime minister is also expected to meet with President Clinton and request a cancellation or re-negotiation of a deal to buy U.S. F/A-18 Hornet fighter planes worth $300 million.
