Christine, the "being alone" "desperation" you refer to, could express itself in a thousand different ways, yet most often its through a belief in the soul or a hereafter.

There must be an underlying attraction to one idea or another. We wouldn't easily believe for example that we are beer cans, or that upon dying our essence is revealed as dijon mustard.

Its our continuing experience throughout life, through withdrawing from and engaging society, always to find meaning in it or by opposition, but meaning none the less__ through a social dialogue that's inside and outside of us. Its a constant in our lives.

This experience easily transfers to a mirroring concept of soul which provides comfort to questions of what happens to us (or to those who die), as we engage the question of "being" without this life.

Earlier you asked if an avid reader would tolerate a broader brush of intellectual life. I suggested that one could certainly engage a more rewarding and pleasurable life by intentionally doing what is enjoyable and rewarding... allowing that individuals will find different strokes. So too I feel with the 'soul.' Its rewarding for some to pursue and not for others, yet each side, believers and non-believers, engages the concept to deal with the question. There's no choice, because its part of the landscape of our shared and individual socio-linguistic self.

Jim

Hi Christine.. pedantic semantish! You are so kind to listen. Who really knows eh? Especially on something as personally felt as the soul. Experience or intuition, leap of faith, or leaping off a bridge.. never quantifiable except by subjective interpretation. Perhaps that's its beauty, such as it is. Think what a lost world it would be, if we could put each other's soul on a scale and measure the volume or weight of it!

There's also a kind of beauty to a universe that's souless I think. A sense of awe and marvel can co-exist without the concept. One can be quite taken with the intricate workings of things, the ureka of grasping and making connections, of feelings, of being here now.
